Summary

The former Co-operative Society premises in the town centre provided the opportunity to create a series of characterful apartments.

During the late nineteenth century and into the mid 1960’s the Co-op developed the Carr Street site as the central offices for its operations in East Anglia. Changes in retail trends, however, caused the company to vacate the building and move its operation to out of town offices.

This large and impressive Victorian structure remained vacant for many years until it was acquired by our clients HG Developments Limited and we were appointed to design and work with them to deliver apartments which would appeal to businesses looking for short term accommodation for staff.

Whilst the Ground Floor of the building was subdivided into smaller retail premises, the upper floors comprised a complex arrangement of offices and staff facilities including a large Banqueting Hall for staff functions. We used the many changes in level and intricate arrangement of spaces within the building to create a series of interesting apartments and the Banqueting Hall provided the opportunity for striking double-height Living Rooms.
