Hayhill Allotment Site, Ipswich
Town Centre, Brownfield Regeneration
When this 18-acre former allotment site close to the town centre was allocated for residential use in the Local Plan its very existence came as a surprise to many people. Adjacent to a Grade 1 listed cemetery it is almost entirely surrounded by 19th Century housing.
In 1996 the owners appointed us to obtain outline consent for an appropriate density and mix of housing. Local residents were understandably concerned at the impact of the development and formed an action group, Save Our Local Environment (SOLE). The group presented a petition of objection with over 3,000 signatures to the Local Authority. In addition there were problems of access and drainage and many regarded the site as being incapable of commercially viable development.
